Learn about “Layer of Skin to Implant Color” to master 99% art of microblading

Layer of Skin to Implant Color

To master the art of microblading, it’s important to know the layers of skin and where the color must be implanted. The top 5 layers of the skin are called the epidermis. They consist of shedding dead cells and rejuvenating cells. If the color is placed within these top layers only, the results will last for a limited period of time.

Underneath the epidermal layers is the upper part of the dermal layers called the papillary dermis. It is also referred to as the dermal-epidermal juncture. It is the goal of the artist to implant color through the epidermis (which as thin as a piece of paper) and into the papillary dermis referred to as, the “Sweet Spot” or “Target Zone”.

Epidermis

The epidermal layers work together to keep the skin healthy. When implanting color with a microblade tool, each layer must be passed through to reach the top dermis layer in order in to create a clear “hair stroke look” for the eyebrows. The thickness of the epidermis varies in different areas of our body’s skin. It is thinnest on the at. 05 mm and the thickest on the palms and soles at 1.5 mm. The epidermis contains 5 layers.

From bottom to top the layers are named:

  • Stratum basale
  • Stratum spinosum
  • Stratum granulosum
  • Stratum lucidum
  • Stratum corneum

The bottom layer, stratum basale, has cells that are shaped like columns. In this layer the cells divide and push already formed cells into higher layers. As the cells move into the higher layers, they flatten and eventually die. The topmost layer of the epidermis is made up of dead skin cells (which will shed every 3-4 weeks), and are replaced by the lower layer of new cells from below which are gradually pushed upwards.

  • There are three types of specialized cells in the epidermis.
  • The melanocyte produces pigment (melanin)
  • The Langerhans cell is the frontline defense of the immune system in the skin.
  • The Merkel cell’s function is not clearly known.
